Translation: Stratis Haviaras, Foreword: Seamus Heaney
The poetic «Canon» of the Greek poet C. P. Cavafy is internationally recognised as one of the great achievements of twentieth-century literature. It consists of the154 poems which Cavafy himself collected as representative of his work. The new English translation of Cavafy’s verse by Stratis Haviaras introduces a new poetic and linguistic overview of the «Canon», superceding earlier translations and updating the rendition of Cavafy in an idiom that is attuned to the aesthetic and literary demands of contemporary English-speaking readers. The book includes an introduction by the 1995 Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney and a frontispiece by the renowned Greek-American artist Dimitri Hadzi.
